Massive Foundry VTT Improvements, Rave Reviews, Playtest Invites!

Necrotic Gnome

It’s a summer to celebrate as OSE keeps winning, from ENNIEs to independent reviewers. But first, we’ve got some exciting news to share for VTT users and playtesters!

Massive Foundry VTT Update: v13, Bundled PDFs, & Tokens!

Big news for virtual adventurers! The Old-School Essentials: Premium Game module on Foundry VTT has received two major upgrades:

  • It now includes 150+ beautifully illustrated monster tokens drawn from the official books. More tokens are already in the works, with the goal of covering every creature in the game in a future update.
  • The full Player’s Tome and Referee’s Tome PDFs are now bundled with the module—no need to dig around elsewhere.

That’s not all: All official OSE adventures now support Foundry v13 and are available from our storefront directly on the Foundry Marketplace.

The response from the online community on Reddit has been glowing so far, so if you’re an online adventurer, consider giving OSE on Foundry VTT a go. Worlds of classic fantasy are just a few clicks away.

We're looking for fresh-faced adventurers and referees to help playtest Dungeons of the Undermoon, our upcoming starter set adventure for Old-School Essentials. No prior experience with OSE is required. In fact, we’re especially keen to hear from new players.

If you’ve been curious about OSE but have never tried it, or even if you are completely new to RPGs, we’d love to hear your thoughts.

This is your chance to:

  • Be among the first to explore a brand-new dungeon crawl written specifically for beginners
  • Share feedback that helps shape the final product
  • Experience the classic fantasy RPG style in a streamlined, modern format

Rave Dolmenwood & OSE Reviews!

Other games have critical hits, but we’re a hit with the critics! We at Necrotic Gnome HQ have been very pleased with our latest releases, and we’re not the only ones.

Here’s what just a few critics and tastemakers have been saying:

The Ruined Abbey of St. Clewyd, complete and updated for the Dolmenwood release, won the coveted “The Best” award from Bryce at tenfootpole!

Carcass Crawler Issue #5, the latest issue of our official OSE zine packed with new rules, classes, items, and more, has also been raking in accolades:

"Packed with really good, useful content" The Gaming Gang

"A great addition to the Carcass Crawler set" - RedMageGM

"An absolutely fantastic release" -  RPG Overviews

RPG Overviews also praised our first Quick Delve release, Milk, and included some tasty suggestions to go with it!

OSE ENNIE Winners!

On the topic of accolades, we’d also like to congratulate the great OSE third-party creations that were recognised at the 2025 ENNIE awards!

The Shrike by Leo Hunt (Gold Winner, Best Adventure – Long Form)

This diabolical adventure locale, set in a decaying fragment of hell itself, is an Archduke’s bounty of fiendish plots, characters, and treasures, easily one of the best big releases for OSE.

The Painted Wastelands by Tim Molloy & Chris Willet (Silver Winner, Best Interior Art)

Explore a trippy, dreamlike landscape of magic, strange technology, and lost secrets, beautifully brought to life by Tim Molloy’s evocative illustrations.

The Dream Shrine by Brad Kerr & Skullfungus (Gold Winner, Best Adventure – Short Form)

A truly one-of-a-kind escape challenge through a dream realm, this independent release from Necrotic Gnome team member Brad and Skullfungus is not to be missed if you fancy something out of the ordinary!
